The 2027 Social Security COLA Is Official. Now What?

The headline number is the COLA. The number that matters is what it does to your budget.

Hello, my dear reader,

The wait is over — the official 2027 Social Security COLA has been announced…

This year it came in at [official COLA % — fill in after the Oct. 14 announcement]. (Going into the announcement, independent groups had projected somewhere around 3.5% to 3.6%.) It’s the number millions of retirees had been waiting for. And my gentle advice is the same every year: don’t stop at the percentage.

Because the COLA — the Cost-of-Living Adjustment — exists for a good reason: to help Social Security benefits keep pace with inflation. On a typical benefit, an increase of this size adds a modest amount to each monthly check. That’s real, and it’s welcome.

But here’s what the headline can’t tell you: a higher benefit doesn’t automatically mean greater purchasing power. The COLA tracks an inflation index — an average of many households, not yours. Your budget is specific. And one piece in particular can quietly absorb part of the raise: Medicare. When Medicare premiums rise and are deducted from your Social Security check, the increase that actually reaches your budget can be smaller than the percentage suggests.

This is why the COLA was never meant to be read alone. It’s one input in a much larger picture — which is why the most useful thing you can do this month isn’t to celebrate (or dismiss) the number, but to look at your income and expenses together, and ask how this increase fits into your broader retirement-income plan.

“The headline number is the COLA. The number that matters to your household is what happens to your budget.”

The COLA is important — I’d never tell you otherwise.

But it was always only one piece of the retirement-income picture.

Always with you, Pri ✨
