What Does Financial Independence Really Mean? A 250-Year Reflection on Freedom

Independence was never about having no obligations — it was about having the freedom to choose your own.

Hello, my dear reader,

Today the country pauses to remember a single, radical idea…

That people should be free to shape their own future.

Two hundred and fifty years later, we still gather around that word — independence — because it speaks to something deeply human: the desire to make our own choices, to answer to our own values, to not be governed entirely by forces outside ourselves.

And here is where I find the parallel so quietly powerful.

Because on a personal level, financial independence is built on the very same longing.

It has never really been about wealth for its own sake. It’s about agency — the freedom to make decisions that reflect who you are, rather than decisions dictated by financial pressure.

There’s a reason this feels so significant. Our minds are wired to experience a loss of control as a kind of threat; when money makes every choice for us, life narrows, and we feel it in our bodies long before we name it. But when we build a foundation beneath our lives, something shifts. We stop reacting, and we start choosing.

That foundation is rarely built in a single, dramatic moment. It’s built the way independence itself was — slowly, deliberately, through countless smaller acts of discipline. A plan tended to. Savings protected. A long-term strategy honored even when the short term tempts us to abandon it.

None of it glamorous. All of it freeing.

So this Independence Day, alongside the history, I invite you to reflect on something closer to home:

“Am I building a financial life that gives me more freedom each year — or one that quietly gives me less?”

Because the founders understood something we’re still learning, one generation at a time:

Freedom isn’t given to us once. It’s something we choose to build, and rebuild, for the rest of our lives.

With clarity, Pri ✨
